Girls Fight Back! 2 hour women’s safety & self-defense workshop

Workshop Description:
Join us for a 2 hour personal safety and self-defense workshop taught by GFB Founder, Erin Weed. You will learn the basic skills to predict & prevent violence by learning about intuition and practical strategies for avoiding crime in the first place. But then comes the fun part…interactive self-defense! You will learn a memorable formula for how self-defense works, then an easy 3 step combination of techniques to disable an attacker and open yourself to escape. We’ll also touch on ground fighting techniques like kicks and foot grabs, and conclude with a demonstration of how to use improvised weapons every woman carries in her purse. Learn more about GFB at http://girlsfightback.com

Feeling unsure about whether or not to attend? Here are a few things to keep in mind. We encourage you to bring a friend, since everything is more fun (and less intimidating) with a pal. The workshop is very basic, and you will not be paired up with anyone. You will not be physical beyond trying some moves in the air (against an imaginary mugger), nor will you have to perform techniques in front of the group. The workshop is only open to women and girls ages 12 and up.  We use quite a bit of humor, and you’ll be amazed how good and uplifted you’ll feel at the end. The workshop is intended to give you a very basic understanding of your personal power, and if you want to learn more you can sign up for GFB self-defense classes which will start in January. Note: Attending this introductory workshop is a prerequisite to attending those classes.

Teacher Bio:
Erin Weed is Founder and CEO of Girls Fight Back, and has been teaching women’s safety and self-defense since 2001. She founded GFB after the murder of her sorority sister, Shannon McNamara, at Eastern Illinois University.  Realizing women needed the basic skills to defend themselves and it didn’t have to be a scary thing to learn, she sought out the best violence prevention and self-defense experts in the world and trained with them. Erin uses humor, a down-to-earth approach to safety as a basic life skill and her love of keeping things simple to teach everyday women to do extraordinary things. She is the author of Girls Fight Back! The College Girl’s Guide to Protecting Herself and speaks to over 100,000 women annually about becoming their own best protectors. Erin has been featured on CNN, the CBS Early Show, the John Walsh Show, Ladies Home Journal, CosmoGirl, Marie Claire and the New York Times.
